Small biz stories: The Wholesome Living Store

Business owner: Vicki Luke

Business name: The Wholesome Living Store

Vicki utilised her passion for sustainability and the environment to create The Wholesome Living Store, an eco-friendly, bulk-buy store emphasising a no-waste lifestyle.

Selling everything from spices, dried fruits and lentils to household products, soaps and jewellery, The Wholesome Living Store hopes to help reduce plastic by encouraging customers to bring their own containers, jars and bags.

How did you start?

I’ve always wanted to be an entrepreneur and last year it finally came to fruition, thanks to participating in the government-run NEIS scheme. I did some research and found out that nobody had ever really thought of doing an eco-friendly, bulk-buy store in this area, so I saw a gap in the market and took it.

What’s been the biggest adjustment in becoming a small business owner?

You think you can imagine what it’s going to be like, but it’s often a lot more work than you anticipated as you have to be responsible for so much. At the same time though, it’s the most rewarding experience as you get to see your dream come to life.

It’s been a rollercoaster journey so far, but already a year and a half in, I know that it’s only onwards and upwards from here!

What do you love about your work?

The best part of my job is definitely the interactions I have with the customers. It’s great to talk with people who come into the store and find out that they share a similar passion for sustainability and helping the planet.
